The Thumperdome

After seeing so many rabbits and guinea pigs in cramped conditions, in tiny hutches at the bottom of people’s gardens, and, if lucky, maybe an occasional run around on some grass, we could see no point in rescuing a rabbit or guinea pig from one hutch to put it into another hutch at the sanctuary. If you are going to do it, it's about changing their lives for the better, so the idea of the Thumperdome came about.

The Thumperdome is twenty-four feet by fifty-four feet, and this is set within an acre of land. The Thumperdome is divided down the middle, with the guinea pigs on one side and the rabbits on the other. The only area that is locked up is the perimeter to ensure they are safe from foxes and wild animals alike.

The Thumperdome is the rabbits’ and guinea pigs’ all-weather home – where they can rest and play. It consists of various areas, wicker baskets full of straw, tunnels and pop-holes which lead out into their paddock. The paddock is full of grass, trees, vegetation and hide-aways - which provide shade and mimic their burrows out in the wild. As always, everything we do is ongoing, we are constantly adding more to provide them with enrichment and allow them the freedom to roam.
